==Early life==
Kennedy began wrestling in school and became a standout wrestling star in Honesdale High School where he racked up 92 wins while qualifying for regionals three times. After graduating from high school, he pursued a degree in philosophy and received his B.A. from Bloomsburg University (now Commonwealth University) in 2018. He initially wanted to wrestle at the collegiate level, but decided to focus on preparing for a career in mixed martial arts instead and subsequently began training at Bloomsburg Martial Arts gym.

==Amateur career==
He began his career as an amateur MMA fighter in 2014 and within three years, he was ranked number one in his weight class in the state of Pennsylvania.

Kennedy's amateur record was 7 wins, 3 losses with all ten fights almost entirely dominated by decisions. His only amateur submission was his first fight against William Tiger in PA Cage Fight 19 with an arm triangle choke 53 seconds into the first round.

==Professional career==
Kennedy's first two professional fights, to Malek Mahmoud and Oscar Garcia, Jr., resulted in losses by unanimous decision. These early setbacks caused him to re-evaluate his training regimen and fighting style. As a result of his renewed determination, Kennedy began training to end every fight with decisive finishes. His third fight was a unanimous decision over Steven Calero at Maverick MMA 21 in November 2022. All his successive fights have been won by knockouts or submissions.

In press interviews, Kennedy has compared his journey as a professional fighter to that of a bamboo tree which takes five years to begin growing after it has been planted.

After his decisive submission over Jeremy Balboa using a rear naked choke in the main event fight at Maverick MMA 25, ''MyMMANews'' reporter Eric Kowal remarked: "Look for this kid to be in the UFC one day."

===Art of War Bantamweight champion===
There was significant press interest before the fight for the vacant Art of War Bantamweight title because both Kennedy and his opponent, Dave Morgan, had been regional standouts in high school wrestling. Additionally, Morgan had been publicly baiting Kennedy through social media with taunts and insults. In response, Kennedy told the ''The Scranton Times-Tribune'', "It's a shame I've got to knock him out."

The title bout took place at Art of War Cage Fighting 43 on 16 August 2025 at the Live! Casino & Hotel in Philadelphia. The fight was refereed by Keith "No Nonsense" Peterson, one of the top MMA officials from the UFC.

Kennedy dominated the fight from the beginning, drawing Morgan against the cage where he began delivering powerful knees to Morgan's head. Referee Peterson stepped in and stopped the fight at 1:15 into the first round, leaving Kennedy to declare victory and accept the Bantamweight belt. Immediately after the result was announced, New Jersey-based MMA fighter "Remarkable" Billy Markle stepped into the ring and challenged Kennedy for the belt. The two fighters then posed for a staredown photo and agreed to schedule Kennedy's first title defense in December.

On 6 December 2025, Kennedy won his first title defense against Billy Markle with a guillotine choke in the second round. The fight was the main event at Art of War 45 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

==Personal life==
Kennedy's interest in spirituality stems from his philosophy studies and he has integrated some [[metaphysics|metaphysical]] practices into his training routine, such as [[yoga]], mindfulness, and breath work.

In 2023, he met [[occultist]] and amateur boxer [[Travis McHenry]] while both were training at the Bloomsburg Martial Arts gym. McHenry subsequently introduced Kennedy to ''New York Times'' bestselling author [[Damien Echols]], who holds a blackbelt in karate. McHenry, Echols, and his wife, [[Lorri Davis]] worked together to design a logo for Kennedy's 2025 fight against Cole Cameron. Their design was a [[sigil]] which incorporated the phrase "Unbreakable Will."

Canopic jars were containers used by the ancient Egyptians during the mummification process, to store and preserve the viscera of their soul for the afterlife. Each of [[Horus]]'s sons were responsible for protecting a particular organ, was himself protected by a companion goddess, and represented a cardinal direction. Duamutef protected the stomach, which was extracted from the body, mummified separately, and placed inside his jar. In some later tombs, these jars were merely symbolic and did not contain the actual organs. According to Crowley, his wife Rose had already reported a revelation from the god [[Horus]], through his messenger [[Aiwass]]. Haures gives true answers of all things past, present and future, but he must be first commanded to enter a [[magic triangle]] for if not he will lie, deceive the conjurer, and beguile him in other business. The ritual recalls Lilith's identity as a mirror spirit found in the ''[[Zohar]]'' in Pekudei: Verse 920. In this verse, any man who vainly looks into a mirror during the night of a new moon risks awakening the [[demon]] Asirta, who in turn, will summon Lilith to torment him.

==Background==
The only known Renaissance-era ritual involving Lilith comes from the fifteenth-century [[Munich Manual of Demonic Magic]] (''Liber incantationum, exorcismorum et fascinationum variarum''). Among the book's magical workings, many of which are unique to this manual, is a ritual called the First Mirror of Lilith (''primum speculum Lilit''). This operation is a form of [[divination]] using [[necromancy]].

By constructing and consecrating a mirror to Lilith, the [[magician]] may discover information concerning murders, thefts, and other hidden matters. In this ritual, Lilith is not conjured as a visible apparition, but invoked through reflection. The mirror becomes a kind of portable [[magic triangle]]. The magician addresses her as a wandering spirit whose gaze reaches into secret places, whose night-sight pierces concealment.

According to the introduction, the power of this ritual comes from the majestic reflection which links the magician with Lilith and her soldiers who are serving under the [[demon]] [[Camio|Caym]]. As a queen in her own right, existing completely outside the structure of the [[Lesser Key of Solomon|''Ars Goetia'']], it is odd that Lilith would be placed in the demonic hierarchy under the 53rd [[Goetic demon]]. Caym, also called Caim or Camio, appears in the form of a bird, but later changes into the shape of a man. In this ritual, Lilith is honored as a ruler over birds and admonished not to appear in the form of a crow. This may be why she is connected with Caym, a bird demon.

==Scholarly analysis==
Several modern [[occultist]]s have studied this ritual and published their opinion on its validity.

In his 2025 book, ''[[The Lilith Liturgy]]'', [[Travis McHenry]] stated that previous translations of the ritual were highly dubious and contained obvious errors. "The most obvious blunder was failing to recognize the inclusion of contemporary Middle High German words in the text (''balbieit'', ''zelans'', ''zelles di medo'', ''cadavies'') which Richard Kieckhefer, who first translated the text in 1998, thought were demonic or divine names." Although the other sons of Horus have animal heads, he has the head of a human. In a funerary context, he was responsible for protecting the liver of mummified people. As ruler of one of the four cardinal directions, Imsety was associated with the south.

==Name==
Imsety's name might be translated as "He of the Dill." This could indicate that he is a personification of the herb dill. However, Imsety's name also resembled the Egyptian word for "liver" (''mjst''), which may be the reason why he became specifically linked with the liver.

His name is characterized by the use of hieroglyph Aa14, the Egyptian symbol for a human rib.

The name of Imsety incorporates the Egyptian grammatical dual ending (-''ty'' or -''wy''), and therefore, along with Hapy, may have actually been a set of twin deities. There is evidence to support this in the somewhat feminine appearance of Imsety on some canopic jars.

==Origin==
Imsety and the other sons of Horus appear in the earliest known writings concerning the ancient [[Egyptian religion]], the [[Pyramid Texts]]. A passage in the later Coffin Texts from the Middle Kingdom (2055–1650 BC) says they are the offspring of the goddess [[Isis]] and a form of Horus known as Horus the Elder.

He, himself, was protected by Isis.

==Canopic jar==
Canopic jars were containers used by the ancient Egyptians during the mummification process, to store and preserve the viscera of their soul for the afterlife. Each of [[Horus]]'s sons were responsible for protecting a particular organ, was himself protected by a companion goddess, and represented a cardinal direction.

Imsety protected the liver, which was extracted from the body, mummified separately, and placed inside his jar. In some later tombs, these jars were merely symbolic and did not contain the actual organs.

==Role==
Although Imsety is most prominently found in funerary context as a canopic jar, he is possibly more closely associated with the [[Egyptian decans]]. Dutch Egyptologist Maarten Raven argues that the four sons originated as celestial deities, given that the Pyramid Texts frequently connect them with the sky and that [[Horus]] himself was a sky deity.

One theory suggests the four sons of Horus are actually four stars in the constellation Ursa Major, which was known to the ancient Egyptians as ''msxtyw'', the Foreleg of Set. This asterism contained a total of seven stars, and these four would have been located in the "meaty" part of the thigh. In an astronomical context, these four stars formed a border between the southern sky and the northern sky, thereby drawing a barrier between Set and Sah (the constellation Orion).

In this context, Imsety was likely the star Dubhe (Alpha Ursae Majoris). This star was also called ''Ak'' ("The eye") by ancient Egyptians.

The '''First Mirror of Lilith''' (''primum speculum Lilit'') is a [[ritual magic|ritual]] to invoke [[Lilith]] and ask her questions through the assistance of [[necromancy]] using a mirror engraved with [[King Solomon|Solomonic]] symbols and text.

The ritual recalls Lilith's identity as a mirror spirit found in the ''[[Zohar]]'' in Pekudei: Verse 920. In this verse, any man who vainly looks into a mirror during the night of a new moon risks awakening the [[demon]] Asirta, who in turn, will summon Lilith to torment him.

==Background==
The only known Renaissance-era ritual involving Lilith comes from the fifteenth-century [[Munich Manual of Demonic Magic]] (''Liber incantationum, exorcismorum et fascinationum variarum''). Among the book's magical workings, many of which are unique to this manual, is a ritual called the First Mirror of Lilith (''primum speculum Lilit''). This operation is a form of [[divination]] using [[necromancy]].

By constructing and consecrating a mirror to Lilith, the [[magician]] may discover information concerning murders, thefts, and other hidden matters. In this ritual, Lilith is not conjured as a visible apparition, but invoked through reflection. The mirror becomes a kind of portable [[magic triangle]]. The magician addresses her as a wandering spirit whose gaze reaches into secret places, whose night-sight pierces concealment.

===Lilith's connection to Camio===
According to the introduction, the power of this ritual comes from the majestic reflection which links the magician with Lilith and her soldiers who are serving under the [[demon]] [[Camio|Caym]]. As a queen in her own right, existing completely outside the structure of the [[Lesser Key of Solomon|''Ars Goetia'']], it is odd that Lilith would be placed in the demonic hierarchy under the 53rd [[Goetic demon]]. Caym, also called Caim or Camio, appears in the form of a bird, but later changes into the shape of a man. In this ritual, Lilith is honored as a ruler over birds and admonished not to appear in the form of a crow. This may be why she is connected with Caym, a bird demon.

==Scholarly analysis==
Several modern [[occultist]]s have studied this ritual and published their opinion on its validity.

In his 2025 book, ''[[The Lilith Liturgy]]'', [[Travis McHenry]] stated that previous translations of the ritual were highly dubious and contained obvious errors. "The most obvious blunder was failing to recognize the inclusion of contemporary Middle High German words in the text (''balbieit'', ''zelans'', ''zelles di medo'', ''cadavies'') which Richard Kieckhefer, who first translated the text in 1998, thought were demonic or divine names." His book contains the entire ritual as well as detailed instructions for creating the mirror.

Some authors have questioned if the ritual is intended to summon Lilith at all. The handwritten manuscript seems to slip from "Lyleth" into "Byleth" at times. This would summon a completely different spirit, the 13th Goetic demon, [[Beleth]].

Occultist Christopher Warnock created the mirror and performed the ritual with the only outcome of becoming violently ill afterward.

==The ritual==
The ritual opens with an invocation conjuring "you demons" in the name of the Father and Son and Holy Spirit. It then gives a list of the powers of [[Jesus Christ]], including his conquest over death and fear.

After performing the initial invocation, the mirror can be engraved with the following text:

* ''Deus omnipotens'' (Almighty God)

The mirror should be in the shape of a shield, but this is not strictly required. It will also be engraved with three Solomonic [[pentagram]]s.

Then the [[magician]] is instructed to take the mirror to a crossroads or to the burial place of someone who was murdered and perform a second invocation. The second invocation uses the divine names of [[Yahweh|God]] and asks that [[Lilith]] appear in the mirror to answer questions at whatever hour she is called. It is likely that the answers to questions would be revealed by [[scrying]] in the reflection of the mirror.

The '''summer solstice''' occurs when one of [[Earth]]'s poles has its maximum tilt toward the [[Sun]]. It happens twice yearly, once in each hemisphere (Northern and Southern). For that hemisphere, the summer solstice is the day with the longest period of daylight and shortest night of the year, when the Sun is at its highest position in the sky. At either pole there is continuous daylight at the time of its summer solstice. The opposite event is the [[winter solstice]].

Although the summer solstice is the longest day of the year for that hemisphere, the dates of earliest sunrise and latest sunset vary by a few days. This is because Earth orbits the Sun in an ellipse, and its orbital speed varies slightly during the year.

==Midsummer==
There is evidence that the summer solstice has been culturally important since the Neolithic era. Many ancient monuments in Europe especially, as well as parts of the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, are aligned with the sunrise or sunset on the summer solstice.

The significance of the summer solstice has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals around that time with themes of fertility. In the Roman Empire, the traditional date of the summer solstice was 24 June. In Germanic-speaking cultures, the time around the summer solstice is called 'midsummer'.

In northern Europe, midsummer was traditionally reckoned as the night of 23–24 June, with summer beginning on May Day. The summer solstice continues to be seen as the middle of summer in many European cultures, but in some cultures or calendars it is seen as summer's beginning. In Sweden, midsummer is one of the year's major holidays when the country closes down as much as during Christmas.

==Neopagan traditions==
Midsummer has [[Paganism|pagan]] pre-Christian roots in Europe. As forms of Neopaganism have widely different origins, observances can vary considerably despite the shared name. Some celebrate in a manner as close as possible to how they believe ancient pagans observed the summer solstice, while others observe the holiday with rituals culled from numerous other unrelated sources.

At the ancient monument of Stonehenge, in the English county of Wiltshire, many people gather to observe the sunrise alignment with the stones on the summer solstice.

An international co-production between the United States, Portugal, France, and Spain, the film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel ''The Club Dumas''. The plot involves authenticating a rare and ancient [[grimoire]] that purportedly contains a magical secret for summoning [[the Devil]].

The premiere showing was at San Sebastián, Spain, on 25 August 1999, a month before the 47th San Sebastian International Film Festival. Though critically and commercially unsuccessful in North America, where reviewers compared it unfavorably with Polanski's supernatural film ''[[Rosemary's Baby]]'' (1968), ''The Ninth Gate'' earned a worldwide gross of $58.4 million against a $38 million budget.

==Plot==
Dean Corso, a New York City rare book dealer, is hired by wealthy collector Boris Balkan. Balkan has acquired a copy of ''The Nine Gates of the Kingdom of Shadows'', a [[grimoire]] by 17th-century author Aristide Torchia said to be able to summon [[the Devil]]. Torchia is alleged to have written the book in collaboration with the Devil, and only three copies survived when he and his works were burned for [[heresy]]. Balkan believes only one of the three is authentic and wants Corso to inspect the other two to determine which one. During his travels, Corso comes into contact with a mysterious woman ("The Girl") who appears to be following him.

Corso interviews Liana Telfer, the widow of Andrew Telfer who sold Balkan ''The Nine Gates'' shortly before killing himself. Telfer later seduces Corso, hoping he will sell the book to her. After they have sex, and he refuses to sell, she attacks him, and knocks him unconscious. The next day, Corso goes to a bookseller he had entrusted the book to and finds him hanged in his store like an engraving in ''The Nine Gates''. Corso retrieves the book and travels to Toledo, Spain, to speak to the Ceniza Brothers, book restorers who owned Balkan's copy before the Telfers. The two show him that, of the book's nine engravings, only six are signed "A.T." while the other three are signed "L.C.F." for [[Lucifer]].

Corso travels to Sintra, Lisbon, Portugal, and meets with Victor Fargas who owns a copy of ''The Nine Gates''. Corso finds that three different engravings in his copy are signed "L.C.F.", and the engravings signed this way have subtle differences from those signed "A.T." Corso relays his findings to Balkan and Balkan orders him to acquire Fargas' copy. The next day the Girl takes Corso to see Fargas, who has been drowned; Corso retrieves Fargas's burnt copy from the fireplace and finds the three "L.C.F." engravings torn out. Corso goes to Paris, France, to investigate the third copy owned by Baroness Kessler. Wary of Corso and knowing he is employed by Balkan, she refuses him. Corso is attacked while walking outside only to be saved by The Girl who exhibits seemingly supernatural powers. Corso hides Balkan's book in his hotel room and tells Kessler about the "L.C.F." engravings, proposing that each copy has three that together make an authentic set of nine. Intrigued, Kessler allows Corso to look at her copy. Corso is attacked, and the Baroness is strangled to death and her library set on fire. Corso returns to his hotel and discovers Balkan's copy is missing, probably stolen by Liana.

The Girl and Corso track Liana to a manor where a [[Satan|Satanic]] [[cult]] are conducting a ritual using Balkan's book. Balkan interrupts the ceremony, takes his copy back, and strangles Liana to death. Corso abandons the Girl, presuming she was working for Balkan, and pursues Balkan but loses him. Corso finds a clue in Kessler's belongings that directs him to a remote castle, where Balkan is preparing to summon the Devil using the nine "L.C.F." engravings. He subdues Corso and forces him to watch as he performs the ritual; it apparently works and grants Balkan power and immunity to harm, and he immolates himself to demonstrate. However, the ritual did not work and Balkan begins to scream in pain. Corso retrieves the engravings and shoots Balkan. Entering Balkan's car, Corso is confronted by the Girl. The two have sex on the ground, the Girl astride Corso and backlit by the castle, now engulfed in flames. Her face appears to change as she grinds on top of Corso.

The Girl explains Balkan's ritual did not work because one of the engravings was forged. When they stop for gas she leaves, but gives Corso a note sending him to the Ceniza brothers. At their shop, Corso finds they have mysteriously vanished and the shop is being cleaned out. As workmen remove a large bookcase, a dust-covered paper floats down from the top. This is the authentic engraving, which depicts a woman who resembles the Girl riding atop a dragon-like beast in front of the burning castle. Corso appears returning to the castle with the gates opening up full of bright blinding light, implying the entrance of the Ninth Gate has opened for him.

==Production==
Roman Polanski read the screenplay by Enrique Urbizu, an adaptation of the Spanish novel ''El Club Dumas'' (''The Club Dumas'', 1993), by Arturo Pérez-Reverte. Impressed with the script, Polanski read the novel, liking it because he "saw so many elements that seemed good for a movie. It was suspenseful, funny, and there were a great number of secondary characters that are tremendously cinematic." Pérez-Reverte's novel, ''El Club Dumas'' features intertwined plots, so Polanski wrote his own adaptation with his usual partner, John Brownjohn (''Tess'', ''Pirates'' and ''Bitter Moon''). They deleted the novel's literary references and a sub-plot about Dean Corso's investigation of an original manuscript of a chapter of ''The Three Musketeers'', and concentrated upon Corso's pursuing the authentic copy of ''The Nine Gates''.

Polanski approached the subject skeptically, saying, "I don't believe in the [[occult]]. I don't believe. Period." Yet he enjoyed the genre. "There [are] a great number of clichés of this type in ''The Ninth Gate'', which I tried to turn around a bit. You can make them appear serious on the surface, but you cannot help but laugh at them." The appeal of the film was that it featured "a mystery in which a book is the leading character" and its engravings "are also essential clues."

In reading ''El Club Dumas'', Polanski pictured Johnny Depp as "Dean Corso," who joined the production as early as 1997, when he met Polanski at the Cannes Film Festival, while promoting ''The Brave''. Initially, he did not think Depp right as "Corso," because the character was forty years old (Depp at the time was only 34). He considered an older actor, but Depp persisted; he wanted to work with Roman Polanski.

The film press reported, around the time of the North American release of ''The Ninth Gate'', creative friction between Depp and Polanski. Depp said, "It's the director's job to push, to provoke things out of an actor." Polanski said of Depp, "He decided to play it rather flat, which wasn't how I envisioned it; and I didn't tell him it wasn't how I saw it." Visually, in the neo-noir genre style, rare-book dealer Dean Corso's disheveled grooming derives from Philip Marlowe, Raymond Chandler's quintessential literary private investigator.

Polanski cast Frank Langella as Boris Balkan based upon his performance as Clare Quilty in ''Lolita'' (1997). Barbara Jefford was a last-minute replacement for the German actress originally cast as the Baroness Frieda Kessler, who fell sick with pneumonia, and after a second actress proved unable to learn the character's dialogue; with only days' notice, Jefford learned her part, spoken with a German accent. Depp met his long-time partner Vanessa Paradis during the shooting.
