It is unknown whether Symmachus the Ebionite was correct in identifying these names because we otherwise know nothing about either of them. Zeboul might derive from a slurred pronunciation of ''zebûb''; from ''zebel'', a word used to mean "dung" in the Targums; or from Hebrew ''zebûl'' found in 1 Kings 8:13 in the phrase ''bêt-zebûl'', "lofty house."

The book itself is the primary magical tool described in its rituals. The manuscript is described as a ''booke of pictures'' which could actually reference a deck of [[tarot|tarot cards]].

==Title==
The original title page of the book has been lost, but it was likely given a generic title reflecting its magical content.

One of the spirits found in the book, [[Oberion]], is similar in name to the Shakespeare character Oberon from ''A Midsummer Night's Dream''. Seeking to capitalize on the similarity of the name and hoping to attract interest in the book from fans of Shakespeare, the authors conflated these spirits into one entity.

==Original manuscript==
The original handwritten vellum manuscript is listed as Manuscript V.b.26 in the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. The latest possible date for creation is 1583.

Its earliest known owner is Richard Cosway (1740 - 1821), an English [[occultist]].

At some point before 1822, it had been split into two parts, each bound in calfskin. Several leaves, compromising pages 1-14 and 33,34 have all been lost.

==Publication==
Authors Daniel Harms, James R. Clark, and Joseph H. Peterson worked together to transcribe and organize the original manuscript into a viable book for a modern audience.

The book was published in 2015 by Llewellyn Publications in a 585 page premium hardcover edition retaining the manuscript's red lettering of important words and holy names. Its full title was ''The Book of Oberon: A Sourcebook of Elizabethan Magic''.

'''Thelema''' (/θəˈliːmə/) is an esoteric and [[occult]] social or spiritual philosophy and religious movement developed in the early 1900s by [[Aleister Crowley]], an English writer, mystic, and ceremonial [[magician]]. The word thelema is the English transliteration of the Koine Greek noun θέλημα (pronounced [θéleema]), "will," from the verb θέλω (thélō): "to will, wish, want or purpose."

Crowley asserted or believed himself to be the [[prophet]] of a [[New Age|new age]], the Æon of Horus, based upon a spiritual experience that he and his wife, Rose Edith, had in Egypt in 1904. By his account, a possibly non-corporeal or "praeterhuman" being that called itself [[Aiwass]] contacted him (through Rose) and subsequently dictated a text known as ''[[The Book of the Law]]'' or ''Liber AL vel Legis,'' which outlined the principles of Thelema.

==Principles==
The Thelemic pantheon, a collection of gods and goddesses who either literally exist or serve as symbolic archetypes or metaphors, includes a number of deities, primarily a trio adapted from ancient [[Egyptian religion]], who are the three speakers of ''[[The Book of the Law]]'': [[Nut|Nuit]], Hadit and Ra-Hoor-Khuit. In at least one instance, Crowley described these deities as a "literary convenience."

Three statements in particular distill the practice and ethics of Thelema:

* Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law, meaning that adherents of Thelema should seek out and follow their true path, i.e. find or determine their True Will..
* Love is the law, love under will, i.e. the nature of the Law of Thelema is love, but love itself is subsidiary to finding and manifesting one's authentic purpose or "mission".
* Every man and every woman is a star implies by metaphor that persons doing their Wills are like stars in the universe: occupying a time and position in space, yet distinctly individual and having an independent nature largely without undue conflict with other stars.

Crowley associated Thelemic spiritual practice with concepts rooted in [[occult]]ism, [[yoga]], and Eastern and Western mysticism, especially the [[Kabbalah]].

His later writings included related commentary and hermeneutics but also additional "inspired" writings that he collectively termed The Holy Books of Thelema. These core texts include:

==Boleskine House==
Crowley purchased [[Boleskine House]], a manor on the south-east side of Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands, in 1899. Crowley believed the location was ideal to sequester himself to perform a series of operations known as the Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage, taken from a [[grimoire]] called ''The Book of Abramelin''.

Crowley became infamous for stories of conducting [[black magic]] and various other rituals while residing at the house; one of his pseudonyms was "Lord Boleskine." His lodge keeper, Hugh Gillies, suffered a number of personal tragedies, including the loss of two children. Crowley later claimed that his experiments with black magic had simply got out of hand.

==Abbey of Thelema==
In 1920, on the island of Sicily, [[Aleister Crowley]] and his followers occupied a small house which he named the [[Abbey of Thelema]]. This location became the focal point for activities related to Thelema where its adherents could practice their beliefs without interference from the outside world.

After two years, the Abbey had descended into a squalid drug den where residents spent their days either having sex or consuming [[recreational drug]]s. Conditions were so unsanitary that one of Crowley's followers died and they were asked to leave Italy in 1922 by the Italian government.

[[Jack Parsons]] developed rituals based upon [[sex magic]] described by Crowley. Crowley was in correspondence with Parsons during the course of the [[Babalon Working]], and warned Parsons of his potential overreactions to the magic he was performing, while simultaneously deriding Parsons' work to others. A brief text entitled ''Liber 49'', self-referenced within the text as ''The Book of Babalon'', was written by Jack Parsons as a transmission from the goddess or force called [[Babalon]] received by him during the Babalon Working.

===Kenneth Grant===
Kenneth Grant was an English ceremonial [[magician]] and advocate of the Thelemic religion. Grant's views on [[sex magic]] drew heavily on the importance of sexual dimorphism among humans and the subsequent differentiation of gender roles. Grant taught that the true secret of sex magic were bodily secretions, the most important of which was a woman's menstrual blood. In this he differed from Crowley, who viewed semen as the most important genital secretion.

==Legacy==
Aspects of Thelema and Crowley's thought in general inspired the development of [[Wicca]] and, to a certain degree, the rise of Modern [[Paganism]] as a whole, as well as chaos magick and some variations of [[LaVeyan Satanism|Satanism]]. Some scholars, such as Hugh Urban, also believe Thelema to have been an influence on the development of [[Scientology]], but others, such as J. Gordon Melton, reject any such connection.

==Early life==
Kennedy began wrestling in school and became a standout wrestling star in Honesdale High School where he racked up 92 wins while qualifying for regionals three times. After graduating from high school, he pursued a degree in philosophy and received his B.A. from Bloomsburg University (now Commonwealth University) in 2018. He initially wanted to wrestle at the collegiate level, but decided to focus on preparing for a career in mixed martial arts instead and subsequently began training at Bloomsburg Martial Arts gym.

==Amateur career==
He began his career as an amateur MMA fighter in 2014 and within three years, he was ranked number one in his weight class in the state of Pennsylvania.

Kennedy's amateur record was 7 wins, 3 losses with all ten fights almost entirely dominated by decisions. His only amateur submission was his first fight against William Tiger in PA Cage Fight 19 with an arm triangle choke 53 seconds into the first round.

==Professional career==
Kennedy's first two professional fights, to Malek Mahmoud and Oscar Garcia, Jr., resulted in losses by unanimous decision. These early setbacks caused him to re-evaluate his training regimen and fighting style. As a result of his renewed determination, Kennedy began training to end every fight with decisive finishes. His third fight was a unanimous decision over Steven Calero at Maverick MMA 21 in November 2022. All his successive fights have been won by knockouts or submissions.

In press interviews, Kennedy has compared his journey as a professional fighter to that of a bamboo tree which takes five years to begin growing after it has been planted.

After his decisive submission over Jeremy Balboa using a rear naked choke in the main event fight at Maverick MMA 25, ''MyMMANews'' reporter Eric Kowal remarked: "Look for this kid to be in the UFC one day."

===Art of War Bantamweight champion===
There was significant press interest before the fight for the vacant Art of War Bantamweight title because both Kennedy and his opponent, Dave Morgan, had been regional standouts in high school wrestling. Additionally, Morgan had been publicly baiting Kennedy through social media with taunts and insults. In response, Kennedy told the ''The Scranton Times-Tribune'', "It's a shame I've got to knock him out."

The title bout took place at Art of War Cage Fighting 43 on 16 August 2025 at the Live! Casino & Hotel in Philadelphia. The fight was refereed by Keith "No Nonsense" Peterson, one of the top MMA officials from the UFC.

Kennedy dominated the fight from the beginning, drawing Morgan against the cage where he began delivering powerful knees to Morgan's head. Referee Peterson stepped in and stopped the fight at 1:15 into the first round, leaving Kennedy to declare victory and accept the Bantamweight belt. Immediately after the result was announced, New Jersey-based MMA fighter "Remarkable" Billy Markle stepped into the ring and challenged Kennedy for the belt. The two fighters then posed for a staredown photo and agreed to schedule Kennedy's first title defense in December.

On 6 December 2025, Kennedy won his first title defense against Billy Markle with a guillotine choke in the second round. The fight was the main event at Art of War 45 in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

==Personal life==
Kennedy's interest in spirituality stems from his philosophy studies and he has integrated some [[metaphysics|metaphysical]] practices into his training routine, such as [[yoga]], mindfulness, and breath work.

In 2023, he met [[occultist]] and amateur boxer [[Travis McHenry]] while both were training at the Bloomsburg Martial Arts gym. McHenry subsequently introduced Kennedy to ''New York Times'' bestselling author [[Damien Echols]], who holds a blackbelt in karate. The '''[[Stele of Ankh-ef-en-Khonsu]]''' (also known as the '''Stele of Revealing''') is a painted, wooden offering stele located in Cairo, Egypt. The designation of this object as the "Stele of Revealing" was given in April 1904 by the [[occultist]] [[Aleister Crowley]], in connection with his ''[[The Book of the Law]]''. According to Crowley, his wife Rose had already reported a revelation from the god [[Horus]], through his messenger [[Aiwass]]. The couple went to the newly opened Egyptian Museum (where the stela had been moved), to see if she could recognize Horus on Monday, March 21, 1904. Rose recognized an image of the god on this painted stele, which at the time bore the catalogue number [[666]], a number holding religious significance in [[Thelema]].
