In the 19th century the Black Mass became popularized in French literature. Modern revivals began with H. T. F. Rhodes' book ''The Satanic Mass'' published in London in 1954, and there is now a range of modern versions of the Black Mass performed by various religious groups.


In 1920, Santee became the youngest person accepted to Harvard University, at only age 13. After leaving Harvard, Santee earned a second BA and an MA in classics at Oxford, before graduating from the University of Berlin with a PhD in 1928. He taught for several years, but after losing his teaching position during the Great Depression, he earned his MD in 1938 at John Hopkins University. Santee was introduced to the [[occult]] by his english professor at Harvard, George. L. Kittredge, author of the book ''Witchcraft in Old New England''.
Witch-hunter's manuals such as the ''[[Malleus Maleficarum]]'' (1487) and the ''Compendium Maleficarum'' (1608) allude to these practices, although they bore little basis in reality.
