Edith was also a Latin scholar and graduated from the University of Missouri in 1914 with an A.B. and B.S. in education with a specialization in Latin. Santee later claimed that he felt pressured to marry her and only did so out of kindness, not because he was in love with her. They adopted a daughter, Ruth, while living in Nashville in 1930. They divorced in 1941 and Edith moved to the Philippines to teach at a government school. She never remarried.
