Agiel (Hebrew: אגיאל, romanized: Agyal) is the planetary intelligence of Saturn. It is often envisioned by occultists as an angel, although this is not strictly an accurate representation.

Sigil of Agiel

Abilities

Agiel may be invoked for purposes of communing directly with the energies of Saturn. It may also be utilized to bind or otherwise restrict the planetary spirit of Saturn, Zazel. These two spirits are generally considered the "positive" and "negative" aspects of Saturn.

Occultist Franz Bardon considered Agiel to be one of the lower intelligences of Saturn without significant power because it surrounded the sphere of earth, thus making it easier to contact.

Textual history

Agiel is listed in the second of the Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Agrippa (1533). The same information is copied into MS Harley 6482, published more recently as A Treatise of Angel Magic, from an older document by Thomas Rudd (1583-1656) around 1699.

Popular culture

In the Sword of Truth fantasy series of books by Terry Goodkind, an "agiel" is the name of a blood-red leather rod used as an implement of torture.
