Thaumiel ("Twins of God") is the first qlippoth on the Kabbalistic Tree of Death, above ghogiel. It is the shadow opposite sphere of keter, its opposing sefirot on the Tree of Life.

Etymology

The word thaumiel (תאומיאל) does not have an exact translation in Hebrew , but it is usually rendered as "twins of God." Its more precise meaning relates to two bodies which are not in agreement, and thus the spirit of the name could be translated as "the contending forces."

Description

Thaumiel is the opposite of keter which is represents unification with God, therefore, thaumiel represents the condition of being separate from God. At its core, thaumiel indicates individuality and the total embrace of one's self rather than communion with others. It embodies conflict and creating boundaries between people.

There may be a sense of balance in thaumiel as part of its dual nature, but the balance is more than likely to be harsh, as in the unnecessary removal of the left arm if the right one has been lost in an accident.

The sense of selfhood and the approach to becoming a living god is viewed as a crucial goal in several Left-hand path traditions of ritual magic. Because of this, Lef-hand practitioners have a particular reverence for Thaumiel.

On the Tree of Death, Thaumiel exists in the Realm of Darkness, which is not explicitly evil, but still murky and unpleasant. Because it is so close to the bottom sefirot of malkuth, it receives some tiny portion of divine light and power, which prevents it from turning completely evil.
