Hismael

The sigil of Hismael in the Three Books of Occult Philosophy.

Hismael is a diurnal jovian Planetary daemon corresponding to the geomantic figures Acquisito and Laetitia, and rules over the angels Advachiel and Amnixiel. When paired with Kedemel, the pair corresponds to the geomantic figure Caput Draconis. He is friends with the other Planetary daemons except for Barzabel.

Characteristics

Hismael's diseases are pleurisy, all illnesses of the liver, palpitations and trembling of the heart, cramps, pain in the spine, all diseases of the ribs and veins, tonsillitis, flatulence, and all fevers which arise from an abundance of blood.

His herbs and plants are cloves, gilliflower, mace, nutmeg, sugar, strawberry, balsam, betony, centaury, flax, smartweed, fumitory, lungwort, pimpernel, comfrey, oregano, rhubarb, self-heal, borage, bugloss, wheat, willowherb, thorow-wax, "leafe Violets," meadow-rues, liverworts, basil, pomegranate, peony, licorice, mint, mastic, feverfew, saffron, cherry, birch trees, mulberry, coral trees, oak, barberry, olive, gooseberry, almond trees, ivy, manna, vine, fig trees, ash trees, pear trees, hazel trees, beech trees, pine, and raisins.

He governs the second and tenth months of pregnancy, the Northeast wind, the air, sweet and well-scented odors, "that which is the most pleasant and delightful without any extreme colors," temperance, sobriety, modesty, justice, the colors blue, purple, and ash colors, storks, snipes, larks, eagles, stock doves, partidges, bees, pheasants, peacocks, hens, sheep, stags, does, oxen, elephants, dragons, tigers, unicorns, dolphins, whales, sheathfish, serpents, and domesticated animals.

His metal is tin and his precious stones and minerals are amethyst, sapphire, emerald, hyacinth, topaz, crystal, bezoar, marble, and freestone.

His day is Thursday, and he rules the first and eighth hours of the same day.

In Numerology

In Numerology, he rules the 12th year of life and corresponds to the numbers 3, 11, 13, 45, and 79. Additionally, his name equals 136 using Gematria, allowing for it to fit in a jovian magic square.

In Geomancy

In addition to the aforementioned figures, Hismael rules the 9th and 12th Houses and is a good sign overall, unless he appears in the company of Carcer, Rubeus, Tristitia, Cauda Draconis, and Puer.

Hismael is listed in the second of Agrippa's Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1533) as a spirit of Jupiter under the Planetary Intelligence Iophiel. MS Harley 6482, published more recently as A Treatise of Angel Magic, from an older document by Thomas Rudd (1583-1656) around 1699 also features the spirit, and gives him the same ruling Intelligence and corresponding planet. This was in turn copied by John Heydon in his book Theomagia (1663). This was in turned copied from heavily in Aleister Crowley's Liber Gaias XCVI, which also features Hismael as a jovian spirit.
