Seal of Muriel from the Magical Calendar

Muriel is the nocturnal angel who rules over the zodiac sign of Cancer. He corresponds to the geomantic figures Populus and Via.

His name means "Highness." The four letters of Yahweh are הוהי HVHY.

Characteristics

Muriel's primary office is to procure the temporal dignities and the moral and theological virtues. According to occultist Franz Bardon, this angel can inform a magician about the primary element of water, its activities and effects in consideration of the entire cosmic lawfulness and in regards to ritual magic and the Kabbalah.

As an Archangel of the Zodiac, Muriel also rules over the month of June and the breast of human bodies. In the hierarchy of angels, he is in the Dominions. Its stone is chalcedony.

The Archdemon of the Zodiac under his control is Phahkaiel, the demon king of Cancer.

He governs bodily imperfections, stomach diseases, weak digestion, coughs, imposthumations of the stomach, and breast cancers.

In the apocryphal Enthronement of Abbaton, Muriel becomes Abaddon, the angel of death.

Textual history

Muriel is mentioned in many grimoires from the 1500s onward. His name first appears in print in Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1531), but must have come from an older, unidentified source. The Magical Calendar (1619) marks the earliest publication of his summoning seal. Arsenal Manuscript 2495 (1600s) contains the earliest known explanation of the angel's abilities, although this text likely utilized an older source.

Theomagia (1663) by John Heydon provides a new sigil, describes him as female, connects him to geomantic figures, and places them under the control of Hasmodai. The geomantic correspondences are taken from MS Harley 6482, which was copied from a document by Thomas Rudd around 1699. It also gives two different sigils for him, with one being for Muriel as Populus and the other for Muriel as Via.
