Seal of Zuriel from the Magical Calendar

Zuriel is the angel who rules over the zodiac sign of Libra. He's a diurnal spirit of the West.

His name means "Strength of God." The four letters of Yahweh are והיה VHYH.

Characteristics

Zuriel's primary office is to study theology, metaphysics, and geometry. According to occultist Franz Bardon, this angel gives a magician the ability to fully comprehend the fertility principle of worldly order.

As an Archangel of the Zodiac, Zuriel also rules over the month of September and the kidneys of human bodies. In the hierarchy of angels, he is in the Principalities choir. Its stone is beryl.

Zuriel also governs diseases in the hauches and ulcers in the lower back, kidneys, or bladder.

The Archdemon of the Zodiac under his control is Hadakiel, the demon king of Libra.

Textual history

The sigil of Zuriel as given in Theomagia by John Heydon.

Zuriel is mentioned in many grimoires from the 1500s onward. His name first appears in print in Three Books of Occult Philosophy (1531), but must have come from an older, unidentified source. The Magical Calendar (1619) marks the earliest publication of his summoning seal. Arsenal Manuscript 2495 (1600s) contains the earliest known explanation of the angel's abilities, although this text likely utilized an older source. Additionally, MS Harley 6482, published more recently as A Treatise of Angel Magic, from an older document by Thomas Rudd (1583-1656) around 1699 also features the spirit. This was in turn copied by John Heydon in his book Theomagia (1663). Here he is placed under the rulership of Kedemel.
