Drawing of Lucifuge Rofocale in the Grand Grimoire

Lucifuge Rofocale according to The Grand Grimoire, is the demon in charge of Hell's government and treasury by order of Lucifer.

Name

The name "Lucifugus" comes from two Latin words: lux ("light"; genitive lucis), and fugio ("to flee"), which means "[he who] flees the light."

Some scholars consider "Rofocal" to be an anagram of "Focalor," the name of a Goetic demon. However, this is not actually the case, and the two demons have nothing to do with each other - the only evidence of any connection between the two is simply a similarity in name.

Another possibility for the origin of "Rofocal" is intimately connected to the very nature of Lucifuge. As Lucifuge is the reverse of Lucifer (Latin for "light bearer"), so is the name "Rofocal" derived from "Lucifer" reversed – that is, "Reficul;" however, as not much is known about this demon, this is also simply speculation.

Textual history

Two grimoires contain the primary source information concerning Lucifuge Rofocale:

However, both texts have dubious authorship with claimed dates of publication far earlier than their actual first appearance in print. Therefore, it is difficult to determine which was the original source. There are minor differences between the two texts, each showing a different summoning seal for Lucifuge, but on the whole, they agree with the method for summoning him and the demon's abilities.

Modern demonology

In some modern left-hand path belief systems, the demon Lucifuge is said to be the ruler of the qliphoth Satariel. This belief originally comes from a claimed translation of an ancient Hebrew manuscript made by Éliphas Lévi and has since then gained acceptance.

Lucifuge Rofocale is featured in the Occult Tarot by Travis McHenry. The demon is the Ace of Pentacles card.

Abilities

Lucifuge Rofocale is an infernal demon associated with the element of earth. He has the ability to make one rich quickly and can give worldly power and authority.
