The Magic triangle or the Magic Triangle of Solomon is a symbol used as a tool in ritual magic, specifically Solomonic magic derived from various grimoires of the Medieval period. It is predominantly utilized to contain or otherwise control spirits such as Kabbalistic angels and Goetic demons.

It is similar to a summoning sigil but works with all spirits.

Textual source

The Key of Solomon is the primary textual source describing the magic triangle. The text states:

This is the Form of the Magical Triangle, into the which Solomon did command the Evil Spirits. It is to be made at 2 feet distance from the Magical Circle and it is 3 feet across. This triangle is to be placed toward that quarter whereunto the Spirit belongeth. And the base of the triangle is to be nearest unto the Circle, the apex pointing in the direction of the quarter of the Spirit.

Form

The triangle should be a black equilateral triangle (although it is sometimes depicted as iscoleces or acute). In the center of the triangle, there should be a dark green circle, outlined in black. Around this circle is the name of Archangel Michael split into three parts in black ink: MI-CHA-EL. Along the three outside edges of the triangle are three words written in red:

  • Anephezeton: Thou great God of all the Heavenly Host.
  • Primeumaton: Thou Who art the First and Last.
  • Tetragrammaton

Most magicians believe this symbol may be drawn on any medium: drawn on the ground, on paper, on parchment, or even on a human body. There is also a tradition of laying a crystal ball on top of a surface upon which the triangle has been drawn or carved, then scrying into the crystal or a mirror to see the spirit.

Function

This magic triangle is intended to be a "landing point" for any spirits a magician is attempting to summon. It should be placed outside of their protective circle so the demon or angel may have freedom to enter or leave the triangle without disturbing the peace and safety of the magician or their assistant(s).

An invocation from the Key of Solomon, and other grimoires, called the Spirit's Chain, is often used in conjunction with the magic triangle. Part of the invocation commands the spirit to appear inside the triangle or be cursed into the bottomless abyss.

Goetic demons

Four Goetic demons are especially difficult to summon without the aid of the magic triangle. They are:

Legacy

The magic triangle is commonly crafted into a metal talisman worn as a pendant with a necklace. These are widely available for sale through the internet or in occult specialty stores.
