Archangel Haniel (Hebrew: חַנִּיאֵל, "God is my grace"), also known as Hananel, Anael, Hanael or Aniel, is an angel in Jewish lore and angelology, and is often included in lists as being one of the seven primary archangels.

Name

The name Haniel derives from the Hebrew Ḥēn (חֵן), meaning "grace, favour, charm" (qualities associated with Venus) + the suffix -Ēl, meaning "God." It is equivalent to the Phoenician name "Hannibal."

Abilities

According to the Magical Calendar, Haniel is associated with the planet Venus, and is the archangel of the sephirah Netzach.

He is regarded as an angel of love who is able to influence the romantic and sexual feelings between partners. His magical image is an angel with white wings wearing a pink robe with images of white roses upon it.

The Grimoire of Armadel says that Haniel teaches the ability to transform precious stones and can give a magician as many stones as they wish. It advises that he should be invoked on Friday before daybreak.

In the hierarchy of angels, Haniel rules over the choir of Principalities.

Legacy

Haniel is one of the magical names inscribed upon the talisman created by Nostradamus for Queen Catherine of France. This talisman was intended to bring good fortune and love while banishing negative energy.

Haniel is one of the archangels encrypted in the Sigillum Dei Aemeth created by Elizabethan magicians Dr. John Dee and his assistant Edward Kelley.

Archangel Haniel appears as The Lovers tarot card in the Angel Tarot by Travis McHenry.
