The Goetic demons are the 72 infernal spirits listed in the Ars Goetia section of the Lesser Key of Solomon. They are alternately called "demons" or "spirits," depending on the translation and the source of the text.
They are closely connected to the 72 Kabbalistic angels, and are subject to them.
Origin
The story of King Solomon conjuring and capturing demons is an ancient tale dating back to the first century. The legend goes that Solomon summoned 72 demons using a specific invocation. He then questioned them and put them to his service according to their abilities and powers. Some variants of the legend say the demons were used as beasts of burden to help build Solomon's Temple.
When he was finished with the demons, rather than send them back to Hell or release them into the world, he trapped them in a brass vessel and sealed the vessel with his secret seal to prevent the demons from escaping. After trapping the demons in the brass vessel, Solomon threw it into a deep lake in Babylon. It remained there, sunken in the bottom of the lake, until some local treasure-seekers found the vessel and broke it open. This released the demons into the world where they can serve and torment mortals.
Ranking
The demons are ranked according the the Hierarchy of Hell as Kings, Dukes, Princes, Marquises, Earls, Presidents, and a single Knight. Each demon is generally accorded a number, based on when the demon was summoned by King Solomon to be put to work building his temple.
Although some versions of the Ars Goetia do not provide the origin story of the demons, all versions do follow the same basic numbering system. Some versions alter the ranking of each demon, but generally, they are consistent across all versions.
Legacy
The 72 spirits of the Ars Goetia have been featured in numerous books, songs, movies, and other art forms since their first inception. Many of the most popular depictions of them originated in the 1863 edition of The Infernal Dictionary.
Films depicting the various demons as villains include:
- Hereditary (2018) featuring Paimon.
- The Conjuring series of horror films featuring Valac.
- To the Devil a Daughter (1976) featuring Astaroth.
- Ghoulies (1984) featuring Belial.
Several modern authors have created tarot decks utilizing the demons. The most popular of these include:
- The Demon-Possessed Tarot (2018) by Travis McHenry
- Occult Tarot (2020) by Travis McHenry
- The Daemon Tarot Deck (2013) by Ariana Osborne
- Goetia: Tarot in Darkness (2021) by Fabio Listrani
- Demon of the Day (2024) by Travis McHenry
